The Ballad Of Stevie Boy

from Play It Loud by Jake Dollery

/

lyrics

In the summer of eighty three
Stevie boy came to be
The apple of his mother’s eye
On his dad he couldn’t rely

School just wasn’t a place for Steve
It wasn’t long before he’d leave
He was a boy beyond control
Darkness dwelt within his soul

He was a boy who thought he was a man
He never gave a single damn
Treading on toes wherever he went
Believing he was heaven sent

Steve left home at just sixteen
Found a job in a canteen
He met her a month later
She was a lover not a hater

So he helped her sell her illegal wears
Steve was smitten and he didn’t care
The cash came quicker than he could spend
No time to think if it would ever end

She wore her tattoos well
Took him from heaven to hell
She showed him pleasures and pains
All flowing through his feeble veins

It was late one Friday night
Six men came looking for a fight
The blows came in thick and fast
Steve prayed his torture wouldn’t last

He doesn’t bother to fight the attack
Coz he knows he’s cornered and they’ll be back
He thinks of a time before it began
This was never ever his plan

In pain he lays in a strange place
Blood streaming from his battered face
He wonders how it got to this
Craving for his mother’s kiss

The vultures start to circle above
Steve lived a life without love
He’s on his way to where he belongs
There’s no amends for all his wrongs

So he drifts away to a better place
Somewhere he can show his face
He looks to the sky starts to pray
Closes his eyes and drifts away
